The Face interviews rock royalty (which is what we used to call nepo babies) Gene Gallagher; LSU basketball star Flau’jae talks to Rolling Stone about her new album and Lil Wayne collab, both of which drop tomorrow; and I’m going to be on the ground at Vidcon all day today — so many good panels — and will have a recap for you this weekend.
WHAT TO KNOW AHEAD OF THURSDAY’S PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE, ACCORDING TO JACK SCHLOSSBERG, vogue
Vogue somehow managed to get Jack Schlossberg — President John F. Kennedy’s only grandson and recent viral star for his, as Vogue puts it, “madcap, young voter-friendly political commentary” — to share his “insights” ahead of tonight’s debate. “When you get bored, check your voter registration to prepare for the upcoming election. (FUN FACT: JFK barely won! In 1960 the final tally was 49.7% to 49.5.%. 100,000 votes made the difference.),” says Jack, who I suspect will be hitting the various social media platforms extra hard this evening.
MEET GENERATION BOOMERANG, theface
In the 1980s, almost half of 18-to-34-year-olds lived in a property they owned. Now, around 40% have moved back in with their parents, and The Face interviewed and photographed five of them. I can’t stop thinking about this quote: “If I wasn’t living here, I might work harder, but I’d also be in this rat race of doing something I don’t love just to put a roof over my head.”
THE TEEN SUMMER JOB IS BACK, theatlantic
More young adults are taking up summer jobs, with about 38% of 16-to-19-year-olds working or looking for work in May, the highest rate since the summer of 2009. Notably, while general demand is higher for traditional seasonal jobs, like summer-camp counselors and lifeguards (in some places, anyway…), interest in corporate summer internships is down.
WHY INFLUENCERS WANT YOU IN THEIR GROUP CHATS, businessoffashion
Instagram’s broadcast channel feature, which functions a little bit like a group chat that appears in a user’s DMs, is quickly “becoming a favorite for online creators and brand founders as a place to seek feedback.” Substack’s chat feature is similar, but with one crucial difference — unlike IG broadcast channels, Substack’s group chats are generally not one-sided. Fans want to connect with their favorite creators, yes, but they also want to connect with fellow fans of their favorite creators.
IS AN INSTAGRAM ‘LIKE’ MICRO-CHEATING? GEN Z EMBRACES DIGITAL SLEUTHING., wapo
The concept of "micro-cheating" is a growing concern in young relationships, fueled by social media and online interactions. Offending behaviors include “liking another woman’s Instagram story, responding to a guy’s post in a classroom discussion forum, and being caught with another woman’s hair tie.”
AS USE OF DRUGS FOR WEIGHT LOSS SPIKES AMONG TEENS, DATA SHOWS GIRLS ARE USING THEM MOST, goodmorningamerica
The “most” in this headline refers to teens specifically, not patients broadly, but this stat is still pretty eye-popping: Among the young people being prescribed GLP-1 medications, an overwhelming majority — 60% — are female, and the number of prescriptions for GLP-1 weight loss medications rose from 8,000 to more than 60,000 between 2020 and 2023. I’m not a therapy pusher, but I hope these kids are seeing shrinks.
