Today’s podcast episode of After School is about money — from saving to splurging to what young people feel is worth spending their cold-hard cash on.
Chloe and Claire Lee are the Gen Z sisters behind
, a shopping app (still in beta!) where you can see what the coolest people are buying through their receipts. They’ve validated this concept through their popular newsletter of the same name that highlights what they and their friends are buying each week.Because Chloe and Claire have impeccable style — and because our conversation took place at the tail end of fashion week — I also got their thoughts on NYFW’s relevance among Gen Z, what they think about the Tory Burch Reva resurgence, and why J. Crew’s comeback is like a high school crush sliding into your DMs.

SNAPCHAT PLANS MAJOR REVAMP OF APP IN BID TO RIVAL TIKTOK, hollywoodreporter
Over the last few years, Snapchat has morphed into a chat app that has more in common with WhatsApp or iMessage than, say, Instagram or TikTok — young people are using the app to communicate with their friends, not to consume content. At the annual Snap Partner Summit held in Los Angeles yesterday, they announced a new For You feed — how very TikTok of them! — of full-screen videos from publishers and creators. “I think bringing content closer to communication is going to fuel a real flywheel for us,” said Jim Shepherd, Snapchat director of global creator and content partnerships.
NOT-SO-GREAT EXPECTATIONS: STUDENTS ARE READING FEWER BOOKS IN ENGLISH CLASS, abcnews
Over the last few years, there’s been a shift in media education, with teachers “decentering” book reading and essay-writing in favor of shorter, digital texts. I understand why this is a problem — deep reading is an important skill, etc. — but it’s also amusing because for decades, students have pretended to read books like Hamlet and Of Mice and Men, only to speed-skim it just enough to pass the pop quiz. Or maybe that was just me?
HELICOPTER U: HOW IT FEELS TO BE A COLLEGE STUDENT WHOSE PARENTS CAN'T LET GO, slate
We talked a bit about this a few weeks ago, but helicopter parenting — which, much like faking your way through reading English books in eighth grade, is not new — has escalated thanks to tech platforms like Snap Maps, FindMy, and Facebook Groups that give overinvolved parents more ways to keep close tabs on their kids. Reading this gave me a near-panic attack.
TIKTOK’S FAVORITE SERVERS SPREAD POSITIVITY AND BRAIN ROT, vulture
The Greenpoint fixture Bernie’s is not just home to one of the best double smash patty burgers in the neighborhood — it’s also the set of TikTok’s best workplace comedy. Missy and Marty have amassed a combined 9.4 million likes on their truly absurd sketch comedy-style TikTok videos. (There’s no way I can adequately describe them, you have to watch one to get it.) But what I’m wondering is what happens when Missy and Marty become so famous they no longer need those server jobs?
GEN Z OUTREACH GROUP HITS ENGAGEMENT MILESTONE, huffpost
Voters of Tomorrow, the country’s largest Gen Z-led grassroots political outreach group whose deputy press secretary was on the After School podcast a few weeks ago, just hit one million voter engagements, which includes 200,000 calls and 800,000 texts to Gen Zers.
ALEXIS OHANIAN'S NEXT BIG BET: WOMEN'S SPORTS, adweek
Very excited to see my former boss on the cover of Adweek! Alexis and the Seven Seven Six team have been investing in women’s sports for years, and now the rest of the world is finally catching up — Deloitte forecast that the industry will generate more than $1 billion in revenue in 2024, a 300% increase from its 2021 valuation. Next week, they’re launching Athlos, a first-of-its-kind track competition at Icahn Stadium on Randall's Island. Kayla Green, CMO of Athlos, told me that younger generations are central to their strategy, and not just because many of their runners — Gabby Thomas, Candace Hill, Mary Moraa — are Gen Z:
Gen Z is propelling forward the landscape of women's sports because they see it as a powerful platform for equality and change. Their passions are deep and wide; Athlos NYC taps into their excitement for the future of women's athletics along with their love of all things music and culture. By bringing these two together, we're collectively driving towards a new era where women athletes are celebrated and empowered."
