A24 Horrors and Inflation Hacks

afterschool.substack.com

Phoebe Bridgers just joined the cast of the upcoming A24 horror film I Saw the TV Glow; Stranger Things star Noah Schnapp has been working as a lifeguard all summer; and Lourdes Leon — Madonna’s daughter — is breaking into music as “Lolahol” with new debut single “Lock&Key.”

GEN Z IS ‘SHOPPING TO SELL’ LUXURY BRANDS AS AN INFLATION HACK, bloomberg
Consumers 25-years-old-and-younger see resale shopping as something of a sport, buying used luxury goods with the goal of selling them later at higher prices. The trend has become particularly popular as inflationary woes mount. The RealReal saw a 50% jump in the first half of this year in the reselling of items bought on the site by Gen Z customers.

TIKTOK IS OBSESSED WITH NEW YORK CITY, RIGHTFULLY SO, rollingstone
New York’s back, baby! I have to admit this piece made me so happy that I live in Williamsburg, a neighborhood that used to be young and hip and cool, but now has more in common with the UES than LES.

Since the “end” of the pandemic, a swarm of would-be influencers has descended upon NYC TikTok. A perennial fixture in movies and on television, the city has given rise to a new generation of transplants documenting their experiences in the city. Now, with the help of one of the fastest-growing media platforms in the world, they’ve created their own genre of sorts: Videos that bastardize neighborhood names, or cluelessly treat storied establishments like new discoveries.

GEN Z SHOWS TIKTOK WHAT LIFE'S LIKE ON WALL STREET—AND BANKS DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO, bloomberg
Unfiltered day-in-the-life videos can serve as a recruitment tool for an industry that is struggling to attract young, diverse talent. But the content can also shed a less-than-ideal light on New York’s biggest banks…so far, the firms are navigating this new reality cautiously.

SHUFFLES, PINTEREST’S INVITE-ONLY COLLAGE-MAKING APP, IS BLOWING UP ON TIKTOK, techcrunch
Collage-style video mood boards are going viral on TikTok — and so is the app making them possible. Enter: Pinterest’s recently soft-launched collage-maker Shuffles that has been climbing up the App Store’s Top Charts thanks to demand from Gen Z TikTokers.

WHY TEMPORARY TATTOO BRAND INKBOX IS SHIFTING ITS MARKETING FOCUS TO TIKTOK, digiday
It’s kinda funny to see these “Why brands are going to TikTok” headlines because it’s like…well, obviously, because that’s the only place to find Gen Z? But I’m a sucker for good data.

“TikTok has increasingly become a focus of our marketing, especially since the iOS privacy updates have really impacted our ability to target consumers online,” said Handley, adding that the app accounts for between 30% and 35% of Inkbox’s website traffic, up from 10% last year.
