Welcome back to After School Weekend Edition, a not-so-brief trends debrief for paid subscribers. Your support keeps this newsletter going!
This newsletter, which usually arrives on a Sunday, is coming on a Monday partly because of the long weekend, but mostly because my husband and I drove to the Florida Keys and my parents met us there, and we’ve spent the last few days eating Key lime pie and sipping piña coladas (my husband, who is something of a piña colada connoisseur, swears by this recipe) and trying to keep our dogs away from the roosters and lizards.
Yesterday at the beach, we were near a group of college students who played Fetty Wap on repeat, and then this morning I saw that his 2015 track “Again” happens to be No. 1 on the TikTok Billboard Top 50 Chart because of that JBL speakers trend. (I could not confirm whether the students were, in fact, listening on a JBL speaker or not.)

They didn’t just play Fetty, but they did exclusively play hip-hop that came out around a decade ago: “Drunk in Love” by Beyoncé, “Tuesday” by iLoveMakonnen, “I Don’t F*ck With You” by Big Sean. The kids are alright, etc.

Like last month, I put together a monthly trends recap! (Unlike last month, I’m sending it three weeks into the next month — that’s what we call an intention-action gap.)
