Downton Abbey-Core and Fizzed Out
“i’m not denying that i’m a little bit delulu"
Riverdale star Camila Mendes and Happy Death Day actress Rachel Matthews are launching a production company; Rihanna is expanding the Fenty universe with hair care; Hailey Bieber stars in Saint Laurent's Summer 2024 campaign; and will any of you be going to VidCon this year…?
IS DATING A TOTAL NIGHTMARE FOR YOU RIGHT NOW?, thecut
Young people’s dissatisfaction with dating apps has been thoroughly documented, but technology is not the only reason single heterosexual women have reached a “breaking point.” One twentysomething woman told reporter Angelina Chapin that men are more interested in “getting shit-faced in New York City every weekend” than in committing to a relationship, while a woman in her 30s said men have become more politically conservative, with an online network of men’s-rights activists who want to “turn guys against women.” (My favorite quote: “I’m not denying that I’m a little bit delulu when it comes to falling in love,” she says. “I’m sorry, I grew up watching Disney movies!”)
TIKTOK'S 'I'M LOOKING FOR A MAN IN FINANCE' VIDEO IS NO JOKE, cnbc
Yeah, the Megan Boni earworm became instantly inescapable because it’s catchy — annoyingly so! — but its virality is indicative of something bigger: Men in finance have always been begrudgingly appealing to women (what they lack in personality, time, and emotional intelligence, they make up for in money), and to Gen Z women, who face financial challenges like student loans, inflation, and FOMO, money is more attractive than ever. NETFLIX TO LAUNCH 14 NEW VIDEO GAMES, INCLUDING ‘EMILY IN PARIS,’ ‘DRAGON PRINCE: XADIA’ AND MOBILE VERSION OF ‘LORD OF THE RINGS’ TITLE ‘TALES OF THE SHIRE’, variety
While I’m not personally interested in playing an Emily in Paris video game, this is an extremely smart area to invest in: While traditional TV and movies are falling out of favor with Gen Z, 95% of Gen Z and millennials play video games in some capacity, and 65% of Gen Z gamers spend over three hours daily playing video games.
WHO LET THE FIZZ OUT? WHY BUBBLE-FREE BOOZE IS ON THE RISE, vinepair
I’ve had a hypothesis that Gen Z hates fizz based on a few podcasts and TikToks, and I’m thrilled to see someone reported out a whole story on this, confirming my hunch: Bubbles are unappealing to young people. Molson Coors Beverage Company recently conducted research on of-age Gen Z drinkers and discovered that “bloating or feeling full was a real pain point,” says Amanda DeVore, the senior director of marketing innovation for Molson Coors. “There’s a real desire for drinks without carbonation.”
‘YOU CAN DO ANYTHING HERE!’ WHY LITHUANIA IS THE BEST PLACE IN THE WORLD TO BE YOUNG, theguardian
Lithuania topped this year’s World Happiness Report rankings for the under-30s, with the country’s Gen Zers and millennials rating themselves 7.76 out of 10 on the happiness scale, ahead of the UK and the US, at 32nd and 62nd respectively. “I choose to be here because I like it here,” says a 28-year-old artist. “I don’t have to do work that I don’t want to do and I don’t have to work in an office.” I want to go.
AI FAKE NUDES ARE NOW A FRIGHTENING REALITY FOR TEENS, wsj
Two-thirds of the students surveyed by Human Factor, a consulting firm that spent two days in Westfield, N.J. interviewing students in addition to surveying more than 1,000 young people nationwide, said it was likely they’d assume a photo was real if it looked real, especially if they thought the victim was the type of person who would share a nude photo. In other words, kids (girls, mostly!) are getting bullied over nudes that their classmates are making of them, and there’s nothing they can do about it.
ANTHROPIC’S CHIEF OF STAFF : 'I AM 25. THE NEXT THREE YEARS MIGHT BE THE LAST FEW YEARS THAT I WORK', fortune
In a personal essay for Palladium, Avital Balwit, the 25-year-old chief of staff at AI startup Anthropic, predicts that AI will eliminate the need to work at all, leading to an aristocratic life for all. Downton Abbey-core!
Another view on unemployment comes from the aristocrats of the past. In the early modern era, landed gentry and similar were essentially unemployed. Perhaps they did some minor administration of their tenants, some dabbled in politics or were dragged into military projects, but compared to most formal workers they seem to have worked relatively few hours.
One last thought:
I guess he thinks AI will revive the economic possibilities of our grandchildren?!
