‘CALL HER DADDY’S ALEX COOPER LAUNCHES THE UNWELL NETWORK, SIGNS UP ALIX EARLE, deadline
The Unwell Network is a new subsidiary of Trending, the recently-announced Gen Z media company that she started with her fiancé, XO Kitty producer Matt Kaplan. Gen Z creators Alix Earle and Madeline Argy are the company’s first two partners. Though the launch press doesn’t explicitly mention podcasts — they stick with vague terms like “multiplatform concepts and projects” and “long form content” — Alex Cooper is the podcast queen. A Gen Z podcast wave is near (if not already underway).
HOW GEN-Z BECAME A GENERATION OF GRAIL-FINDING FASHION ARCHIVISTS, hypebeast
As luxury prices continue to increase — they jumped 29% in 2022 — Gen Z consumers are (unsurprisingly, obviously) turning to designer vintage. There’s a viral TikTok trend of young fashion enthusiasts showcasing their archival fashion collections; brands like Fendi, Marc Jacobs, Dior, Rick Owens, and others are experiencing high demand for their archive collections, driven by Gen Z interest. On TikTok, the hashtag #archivefashion has clocked up 36 million views in the past month, with 1.1 billion views in total.
I HOPE YOU’RE READY TO DRESS LIKE IT’S 2013 AGAIN, glamour
Now that virtually every Y2K trend has experienced a revival, it’s no surprise that styles from the 2010s — “characterized largely by statement necklaces, peplum tops, skater skirts, and infinity scarves” — are slowly winding their way back. I’m not prepared for this :/
LIGHT LANGUAGE: THE PEOPLE WHO BELIEVE THEY’RE CHANNELLING ALIEN ENERGY, dazed
Videos of young people speaking in tongues, referred to as "light language," have gained popularity on TikTok. A new cast of “light language activators” — self-styled experts offering a spiritual unlock — are profiting on the process. At the time of writing, #lightlanguage has over 237 million views on the app. (Thank you to my friend
WE’RE CALLING TANK TOPS ‘WIFE PLEASERS’, gq
“Ladies, if your man wears his wife pleaser but doesn’t tuck it into the vintage 501s, then he’s for the streets—he’s a slut,” creator @matt0haverty declared on TikTok earlier this summer.
On TikTok, where users routinely replace words that might trigger viewers (or get flagged as inappropriate) with twee coinages like “unalive” (for “kill”), Gen Z women and men have landed on “wife pleaser” or “wife respecter” as an alternative to “wife beater,” the once-ubiquitous term for the ribbed white tank tops that have recently come back into fashion.
GEN Z WILL BE LAST GENERATION WITH WHITE MAJORITY IN US, STUDY FINDS, theguardian
Gen Z Americans – who were born between 1997 and 2012 – will be the last generation with a white majority and will give way to a post-2012 “majority minority” Gen Alpha. The change – when non-Hispanic white people will fall below half as a share of the overall US population – should come around 2045, the study predicts.
WHAT IS IJBOL?, nyt
Apparently, there’s a new acronym replacing LOL and ROFL on social media? It stands for “I just burst out laughing.” Ellie Jocson, a 25-year-old bank analyst in Manila, uses IJBOL instead of LOL, because she said it more accurately reflected what happened “behind the screen” while scrolling through social media. “I’m usually just quiet,” Ms. Jocson said. “And then I let out a snort.”

We could just call them tank tops, right? 😅
