The definition of “preppy” may be changing — at least among Gen Alpha — but the aesthetic once associated with Lisa Birnbach (Birnbachcore?) appears to be experiencing a resurgence.
Last week, W published the headline: “Preppy Staples Make a Comeback.” The week before that, Town & Country — a publication that understands preppy more than most — reported on the reemergence of “Ralphcore,” writing that a “preppy revival is sweeping pop culture, and suddenly the coolest label to wear is your old Polo Ralph Lauren from high school.” A few months prior, WWD published: ”Old-school Prep Back With Fresh Twist for Spring,” and Elle wrote: “Forget Indie Sleaze, Noughties Preppy Is Back.”
But this isn’t new, exactly.
