As a teen in Missouri, I devotedly read Gawker, Socialite Rank, Imaginary Socialite, Park Avenue Peerage, Guest of a Guest, New York Social Diary, and surely others I can’t remember the names of, desperate for glimpses into lives more glamorous than mine.
I suspect this obsession was a symptom of spending too much time watching Gossip Girl and reading Teen Vogue before my frontal lobe had fully developed, but it’s impossible to deny the voyeuristic appeal of reading the gossip and goings-on from parties you can’t attend, restricted by proximity both physical (I was 1,060 miles from New York) and societal (I was just some kid in the rural Midwest).
