Welcome back to After School Weekend Edition, a weekly trend debrief for paid subscribers.💫

Today we’re talking about:

  • Will Gen Z care about the Olympics?

  • Summer 2014 nostalgia

  • Vampire Weekend

  • March Madness TikToks

  • Seatbelt bags

  • Rizz Party lore

  • Vacation’s relaunch of Orange Gelée

  • Cavoodle method

  • Travis Scott’s campus tour

Plus everything else that happened this week in youth culture and what I’m buying/reading/listening to. But first, my favorite TikTok of the week:

You’re getting the weekend letter on a Monday morning because I moved yesterday. I was on track to hit send just before noon, but then the movers showed up early (aren’t they supposed to come late?) and the rest of the day devolved into chaos. Having three pets — a grumpy old dog, a grumpier older cat, and a wild foster puppy — did not help. (Anybody want a puppy?)

I moved from Williamsburg to Greenpoint, a mere 1.8 miles; my last move, in 2021, was .2 miles away. This is my sixth move since coming to New York in 2010 from Missouri, and I have yet to live outside a 2-mile radius in North Brooklyn (with the exception of two summers spent in NYU dorms while interning, though I don’t really count those). But the distance doesn’t matter when you’re packing your life up into 30 reusable bins. The disruption is all the same. After pawing through 15 of those bins, I finally found my coffee maker, which is why this letter made it to you at all.

Earlier this week, I joined the legendary

Ben Dietz
on [SIC] Talks, where we discussed everything from the shifting definition of preppy to the uniquely depressing media landscape to my theory that the new Vampire Weekend album will be a hit with the youths.

It is all very funny!

Ben and I recorded on Wednesday, and on Friday, he texted me that he was playing “Mary Boone” and three of his kid’s 14-year-old buddies said they “like that song” unprompted. Ben then told them my theory and one said, “My parents really like that band.”
