North West, 9, is getting her own skincare line (allegedly); Tyler, The Creator just shared his latest single, “Dogtooth”; the next Michael Phelps may be a 20-year-old Frenchman; and 47% of Gen Z daters think men should take the lead in relationships, according to (ironically?) Bumble.
Take a scroll through the new Perspective site from my friends at Day One Agency. Home to some fascinating editorial content, Perspective takes a more nuanced approach, asking what marketing is effective, which brands are resonating, and where Gen Z’s interests lie. Check it out here.
WHY CHINESE APPS ARE THE FAVORITES OF YOUNG AMERICANS, WSJ
Four of the five hottest apps in the U.S. in March were founded in China. Temu — just seven months old! — was the most downloaded app, followed by TikTok’s video-editing partner app CapCut and TikTok itself. Fast-fashion retailer Shein came in fourth. Then came Facebook, the only non-Chinese app among the top five.
TIKTOK’S LIVE SHOPPING PILOT ATTEMPTS TO MAKE SELLERS’ LIVES EASIER, wwd
Pacsun, Revolve, and Willow Boutique (a Kentucky-based clothing store that sells pink cowboy boots and rhinestone-encrusted jorts) are among the first sellers that have joined the trial, which allows shoppers to complete the checkout process without leaving TikTok’s app.
PEOPLE STARTED BUYING CROCS DURING THE PANDEMIC. THEY CAN’T STOP., nyt
Sales of the shoe are up nearly 200 percent since 2019, thanks in large part to Gen Z. “I roll into the gym with my Crocs on and everything, and people ask, ‘Aren’t you going to change shoes?’” 25-year-old Maggwa Ndugga said. “No, this is how I’m going to live life for now.” (“This is how I’m going to live life for now” is my new motto.)
ADIDAS AND TOMMY HILFIGER TO DEBUT CROSS-PLATFORM DIGITAL FASHIONS AT METAVERSE FASHION WEEK, glossy
Decentraland’s second annual Metaverse Fashion Week, running today through Friday, has Adidas, Coach, and Tommy Hilfiger “on board to engage with web3 communities while offering gifts and token-gated access.” This year’s event is “focused on interoperability, where users can jump between platforms.” However:
Even with all the improvements, what’s still missing is an obvious link from Metaverse Fashion Week to brands’ web2 communities. With most of the event’s and participating brands’ marketing focused on web3 communities on Twitter and Discord, the fashion industry’s biggest platform, Instagram, is still being left out of the conversation.
GEN Z’S CLEAN LIVING MEANS £14 BILLION IN LOST ‘SIN TAX’ FOR UK, bloomberg
The decline of so-called “sin taxes” on tobacco and alcohol in recent decades has left a £14 billion ($17.1 billion) hole for the Treasury to fill as younger generations switch away from cigarettes to vapes and turn off the booze altogether. I’m curious if that tax loss is similar in the U.S.
